At Wine Country to the Rescue, we are committed to equipping Northern Sonoma County Firefighters with the latest tools to combat wildfires effectively. On August 22, 2022, we proudly took possession of a state-of-the-art HeloPod®, a critical piece of firefighting equipment now strategically placed in the Geysers—an area known for its rugged terrain, fire-prone vegetation, and challenging wildfire conditions.
This game-changing addition to our firefighting arsenal significantly enhances response capabilities, providing a reliable and efficient water source for helicopters during wildfire operations. The HeloPod® represents a milestone in our ongoing efforts to protect lives, property, and the natural beauty of Northern Sonoma County.
What is the HeloPod®?
The HeloPod®, designed and manufactured by Pump Pod USA, is the first high-capacity helicopter dip source that can be pre-positioned or deployed tactically. Unlike traditional water tanks, the HeloPod® is portable, fast to deploy, and loaded with features that maximize efficiency and safety.
Key Features of the HeloPod®:
High-Capacity Storage: Models like the T-MADS 4600 hold thousands of gallons of water, ready for immediate use during firefighting operations.
Rapid Deployment: The HeloPod® can be transported by a tilt trailer, flatbed truck, or even airlifted. Once on-site, it’s operational in just 5 minutes.
Quick Refill Rates: With an optional built-in 800 GPM auto-fill valve and float assembly, the HeloPod® automatically refills when water levels drop. This ensures helicopters can access a continuous supply without delays.
Multi-Purpose Use: Beyond wildfire suppression, the HeloPod® can serve as a cistern, nursing tank, or supply source for ground operations and mop-up efforts.
Integrated Storage Cabinet: A built-in cabinet allows for secure storage of pumps, hoses, and fittings, making the HeloPod® a fully self-contained unit.
Advanced Technology: Optional features include remote monitoring and activation through the “Overwatch” suite, which provides 24/7 surveillance for smoke, fire, and weather activity.
How Does the HeloPod® Work?
Strategic Placement:The HeloPod® is positioned close to fire lines or areas prone to wildfires, such as the Geysers. Its portability ensures it can be moved as fire conditions evolve.
Helicopter Refilling:Helicopters hover above the HeloPod®, dipping buckets or using hover-fill mechanisms to load water. The HeloPod®’s design ensures rapid refilling, maximizing the number of water drops per hour.
Auto-Fill Functionality:When connected to a municipal water source or hydrant, the HeloPod®’s auto-fill valve maintains water levels without manual intervention. This allows it to support multiple Type 1 helicopters during high-intensity operations.
Enhanced Efficiency:Traditional dip sites often require assembly or rely on distant natural water sources. The HeloPod® reduces helicopter travel time, enabling a single FireHawk helicopter to triple its water drops per hour—from 4,000 gallons to 12,000 gallons—when positioned close to the fire line.
Why the Geysers?
The Geysers, with its geothermal fields and fire-prone vegetation, is one of Northern Sonoma County’s most wildfire-vulnerable areas. The steep terrain and remote access present unique challenges for traditional firefighting methods.
By placing the HeloPod® in this region, firefighters gain immediate access to a reliable water source, improving their ability to contain fires before they spread. This strategic deployment protects critical infrastructure, natural resources, and nearby communities.
Strategic Alliance with Calpine
The deployment of the HeloPod® in the Geysers is a testament to the invaluable strategic alliance between Wine Country to the Rescue and Calpine, a leader in geothermal energy. As stewards of the Geysers’ geothermal fields, Calpine understands the critical importance of wildfire prevention and response in protecting this vital infrastructure and surrounding communities. Their collaboration with Northern Sonoma County Firefighters ensures the HeloPod® is optimally positioned and supported, providing a reliable and effective resource for rapid helicopter refills during fire suppression efforts. This partnership exemplifies how community-focused organizations can work together to safeguard both natural and industrial assets while strengthening wildfire resilience.
Preparedness Benefits
The HeloPod® is more than a water tank; it’s a force multiplier in wildfire suppression:
Enhanced Helicopter Efficiency: By reducing travel time, helicopters can drop more water in less time, increasing containment efforts.
Safety Improvements: The HeloPod® minimizes risks associated with traditional “pumpkins” or fold-a-tanks, which can be less stable and slower to use.
Cost-Effective Alternative: Compared to permanent dip sites, the HeloPod® is faster to deploy, requires no excavation or permitting, and costs less than 25% of a permanent installation.
A Community-Funded Solution
The purchase of the HeloPod® was made possible through the generosity of Wine Country to the Rescue attendees, sponsors, and donors. This cutting-edge tool enhances Northern Sonoma County Firefighters’ ability to protect lives, property, and natural resources effectively.
A Safer Future for Northern Sonoma County
The addition of the HeloPod® in the Geysers represents a significant step forward in wildfire preparedness and response. Its innovative design and advanced capabilities ensure our firefighters are equipped to meet the challenges of increasingly active wildfire seasons.
Thank you to everyone who supported this initiative. Join us at the next Wine Country to the Rescue event to continue funding life-saving equipment and making Northern Sonoma County a safer place for all. Together, we’re building a stronger, more resilient community!
