Wine Country to the Rescue Honors John Jordan as Honorary Firefighter of the Year

Updated: Dec 7, 2024

At Wine Country to the Rescue, we believe in celebrating those who go above and beyond to support our firefighters and the communities they serve. That’s why we’re proud to announce that the Northern Sonoma County Firefighters presented John Jordan, founder of the John Jordan Foundation, with the inaugural Honorary Firefighter of the Year Award for 2018.

This award, created by Wine Country to the Rescue, recognizes individuals who make extraordinary contributions to the safety and well-being of Northern Sonoma County. On July 25, four firefighters visited Jordan Winery to honor John Jordan with a commemorative firefighter’s axe and plaque, a token of gratitude for his unwavering support.

Supporting Firefighters in the Field

Through the John Jordan Foundation, John has funded two major initiatives that directly enhance the effectiveness and safety of our local fire crews:

  • Specialized Air Pack Vehicle: A two-year commitment helped firefighters purchase a vehicle equipped with a compressor to refill air packs on the field. This life-saving equipment is essential during prolonged incidents, ensuring that firefighters can stay in action when they’re needed most.

  • Pre-Fire Attack Maps: This year, John Jordan’s generosity enabled the purchase of critical pre-attack maps. These maps provide strategic information about local terrain, topography, and landmarks, ensuring that firefighters from outside the area can quickly orient themselves during emergencies.

A Leader in Community Rebuilding

John Jordan’s contributions extend beyond firefighting. Following the devastating wildfires of October 2017, the John Jordan Foundation stepped up to support Northern Sonoma County’s recovery. Highlights of the foundation’s efforts include:

  • $25,000 Donation to the SCGGF Wildfire Relief Fund: This fund supports agricultural workers who lost their homes, helping stabilize the backbone of Sonoma County’s economy.

  • Investment in Santa Rosa Community Health: Funding was provided for the rebuild of the Santa Rosa Community Health Vista Campus, which was lost in the fires, as well as services at the interim Dutton campus.

  • Mental Health Resources for Schools: Recognizing the lasting impact of the fires on students, the foundation funded programs to address growing mental health challenges in local schools.

  • United Way & CTE Foundation Support: From free tax preparation services to expanding career pathways in construction and engineering, the John Jordan Foundation has been instrumental in creating opportunities and resilience across the region.

A Well-Deserved Recognition

“We wanted to create a way to recognize our donors,” said Joe Stewart, Captain of Geyserville Fire. “John has been our most generous donor, and we thought it would only be appropriate to make him the first honorary firefighter.”

This inaugural award is not just a token of appreciation—it’s a testament to the vital partnership between community leaders like John Jordan and the firefighters who risk their lives to protect us.

Building a Stronger Sonoma County

As we reflect on the challenges of recent years, John Jordan’s leadership reminds us that resilience is a collective effort. Through the support of Wine Country to the Rescue, the John Jordan Foundation, and countless community members, we’re building a safer, stronger future for Northern Sonoma County.

To John Jordan: Thank you for your vision, generosity, and commitment. You’ve not only earned the title of Honorary Firefighter of the Year but also a place in the hearts of those you’ve helped protect and uplift.

Together, we are stronger.
